Nothing teases the design of wireless headphones

With, well, nothing to show the public for months, Nothing, the low-key tech startup founded by former OnePlus founder Carl Pei, has finally released concept images of its upcoming wireless headphones. The company says the transparent devices – purely conceptual at this point – feature a limited mark and remain in line with the company’s no-frills technological approach.

The company said the wireless headphones, titled Design Concept 1, are “the starting point of our road to nothingness.” From the start of its existence, the enigmatic company has been committed, as part of its design principles, to “breaking down barriers between technology and people to create a seamless digital future.”

“Concept 1 is a first expression of our design principles,” the company said in a blog post. “It represents Nothing’s overall design philosophy – not a specific product or category per se.” The device is said to be “inspired by a grandmother’s tobacco pipe” and is designed to be light, timeless and effortless.

Last month it was announced that the Tech Footprint had brought in Teenage Engineering as one of its founding partners. Alphabet’s venture capital arm, Twitch co-founder Kevin Lim, and Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman have all invested in this mysterious adventure.

Concept 1 is the first step in the company’s goal of creating a complete and transparent technology ecosystem, although the company recognizes that it will take time to grow. Teenage Engineering vice director of design Thomas Howard said Wallpaper.com that nothing of the “nothingness” vision is a “20 or 30 year vision”.

A spokesperson for Nothing said the design of their true wireless headphones, which are slated to launch this summer, will feature features similar to Concept 1, including transparency, use of familiar shapes and minimal branding. “Even though the same design principles will be followed and there will be similarities to Concept 1, the end product will be different.”

Meanwhile, Pei’s former company OnePlus recently announced that its Series 9 phones will debut at the end of March.
