NEWARK, NJ (CBSNewYork) – Residents of New Jersey’s largest city are welcome to spend Thanksgiving at home.
The mayor of Newark is pushing the city to close from Wednesday.
As CBS2’s Jenna DeAngelis reported, on the first day of the 10-day shutdown, people were on the move, including Suzy Morais, who was collecting the essentials.
“I do all of my groceries, my drugstore, so I can kind of stay home,” she says.
Morais said she plans to follow the city’s advice on staying at home with the goal of reducing the COVID positivity rate to 21%.
It’s the double of the Ironbound section, where DeAngelis met a man who said “I would stay home” if he wasn’t working.

While on Ferry Street, the man noticed the closing of some stores. Others, like a clothing store, were open taking customers’ temperatures.
“Obviously everyone thinks it’s just a recommendation,” he said.
The owner of downtown Pita Square was among those seeking clarity, but chose to stay open.
“People are confused. They don’t know who should be open, who should be closed. So I don’t think it’s going to help anything, to be honest, ”said Medhat Eldeeb.
“We have milk, we have eggs, we have bread. This is basically why we decided to open, ”said Raul Grados, director of Delicias Bakery.

During a Facebook briefing on Monday, Mayor Ras Baraka called for the closure of non-essential businesses, except supermarkets, pharmacies, gas stations and laundromats.
“All restaurants can do take out until 8 pm, but we expect everyone to be closed,” Baraka said. “We expect people to shelter in place, to stay in place for 10 days. Our people will be on the streets to make sure that happens. “
“There is a 9 pm curfew on weekdays,” was the message from a police vehicle.
DeAngelis noticed officers walking around, reminding of curfews, but many people didn’t get the message to stay home.
CBS2 has contacted the mayor’s office to see if it will be implemented or not, but has not received a clear response.
In his latest video online, the mayor said he believed most residents would “do the right thing”.
The home care notice is in effect until December 4.
