Few teams have done as well in all things “home” as the state of Ohio in the past decade.
Of the 10 high school players ranked as five-star talent since the Buckeyes hired Urban Meyer after the 2011 season, all but two have ended up at Ohio State.
That was until 2023, five-star defensive end Brenan Vernon picked the Irish over the Buckeyes, signing up in late June.
Is this the start of something new or just a fluke?
Marcus Freeman, a former Ohio State linebacker and current Notre Dame defensive coordinator, doesn’t seem to stop there, and neither do the rest of Brian Kelly’s Fighting Irish staff.
It’s one thing to delve into the outlook, but another to throw the kitchen sink on the agenda that has been the powerhouse of the Midwest for the past two decades. With the way Freeman conducted his business during his first six months on the job, it looks like efforts won’t slow down anytime soon.

Here are four other star Ohio high school soccer players that Notre Dame is trying to pull out of the Ohio state backyard in upcoming recruiting rounds:

Aamil wagner is a top 200 offensive tackle at Wayne High School in Dayton, which happens to be the same school as Freeman. Wagner is listed at 6-6, 265 pounds, and is listed as the 76th overall player in the 2022 recruiting cycle by 247Sports.
Wagner put both Notre Dame and Ohio State in his top six, as well as Auburn, Kentucky, Penn State and Stanford.
Luke Montgomery – Attacking tackle

6-5, 260 pounds Luc Montgomery of Findlay, Ohio listed both Notre Dame and Ohio State in its top 12 potential schools at the end of June. Montgomery is currently ranked four stars on 247Sports and has some great players nationwide who are hoping for his engagement, as you can see by who else made his top 12 (South Carolina, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Stanford, Tennessee, Penn State, Georgia, Michigan, Clemson and Alabama).
Joshua Padilla – inside offensive lineman

The second of two players listed here who went to Wayne High School, again, home of Marcus Freeman. Joshua Padilla is a year younger than Wagner but incredibly coveted at 6-4, 265 pounds.
Padilla currently has about 15 offerings listed, including from Notre Dame and the State of Ohio, and is ranked 166th overall in 247Sports.
Sonny Styles – Security / Mr. Everything about Defense?
Happy to receive an offer from the University of Notre Dame !! #GOIRISH pic.twitter.com/VBLXOCQHCF
– Alex “Sonny” Styles (@sonnystyles_) September 2, 2020
If the last name sounds familiar to you, it’s because Thread styles is the younger brother of Notre Dame first year catcher Lawrence. Don’t let that make you think the 2023 rookie is definitely heading to South Bend, as their dad played his college ball at Ohio State.
Styles could end up being the nation’s best overall defensive rookie in a few years, as his 6-4, 215-pound frame should allow him to play at multiple levels of the collegiate defense he is adjusting to – think like Isaiah Simmons from Clemson a few years ago.
