The Tulare lawmaker said there were basically two questions about the next recall ballot: Should we recall Newsom, and for voters who answer yes, who should replace him as governor?
Nunes said the candidates for the second question are not divided by party, in that anyone can run to replace the beleaguered Democrat, who has been criticized for coronavirus lockdown measures that have hurt businesses of State.

“Newsom cannot be on the ballot,” Nunes told England at the conference. “We have to come together around one candidate.”
He explained that the turning point on whether Newsom is likely to lose his recall vote will be when, if so, a member of his own party joins the list of candidates seeking to replace him; the suggestion being that Democrats wouldn’t want to have to choose between a bunch of Republicans and Independents and would be likely to side with the incumbent president.
“The thing to watch out for is when the left starts to eat yours,” Nunes told CPAC. “As soon as a prominent Democrat announces he’s going to run, that’s when it will likely slip and Newsom has a good chance of being recalled.”

California Democrats, he said, “are taking a great risk” if they decide not to have a top Democrat in the pile of potential candidates for replacement.
Nunes went on to suggest that the recall election would likely fall in the fall of this year.
To date, two US governors have been successfully recalled from their posts: former Democratic Governor of California Gray Davis – who was notably replaced by actor-turned-Republican politician Arnold Schwarzenegger – in 2003 and Republican Governor of Dakota from Nord Lynn Frazier in 1921.
