Nurses at St. Luke Hospital in Duluth on Saturday reached an agreement in principle on a new three-year contract with the hospital and will cancel a strike scheduled for Oct. 3.
The nurses, represented by the Minnesota Nurses Association, will vote Wednesday on the ratification of the agreement. The nurses' negotiating team recommends voting "yes" for ratification, said the union.
"The nurses are delighted that this agreement resolves the staffing crisis and ensures that there are enough nurses to care for the patients safely," the union said in a statement.
According to the agreement in principle, nurses will receive wage increases of 3%, 3.8% and 2.25% over the next three years, the union said. They will also receive bonuses if they are called when the hospital can not track the number of patients or the severity of their problems. The agreement also includes measures to combat workplace violence for nurses in St. Luke.
St. Luke President and CEO Kevin Nokels on Saturday issued a statement stating that the hospital was confident that nurses would ratify the proposed contract.
"St. Luke's has been working in good faith to conclude a fair contract for our valued nurses and is helping to preserve the future of St. Luke as an independent health care system, "said Nokels.
Nurses voted earlier this month in favor of a strike on October 3 if a contract was not concluded before that date. The union represents about 650 nurses in St. Luke, Duluth's second largest employer.
