Nutcracker ballet on an Alameda tarmac

Drop everything off immediately and check out this rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “Snowflakes Waltz” on an airport tarmac by Post: Ballet.

Everyone who saw Tchaikovsky Nutcracker performed live knows the best part is the last track before the ‘Snowflakes Waltz’ intermission, where dancers dressed as anthropomorphic snow crystals dazzle you with a climactic show of choreographed wonder that leaves audiences enthused by celebrations. But everyone who saw Tchaikovsky Nutcracker performed live know they won’t see Tchaikovsky Nutcracker played live this year.

To our rescue comes this “Snowflake Waltz” exquisitely filmed and choreographed by Post: San Francisco Ballet and members of the Berkeley Ballet Theater. Yes, it’s an airport tarmac at Naval Air Station Alameda, and the dancers are clearly wearing sneakers rather than ballet flats.

But the landscape that looks like an abandoned shipyard, the masks and the surreal skies are the height of celebration during this lonely and tragic holiday season. And the backdrop of the San Francisco skyline adds to the striking but still whimsical number.

If you like their stuff, this video will also be part of the Berkeley Ballet Theater’s Available Light program on Saturday, December 19 at 7 p.m., which is a free show that airs live. Another number of this show will feature choreography by Robert Dekkers, who choreographed the “Snowflake Waltz” number above.

And we’re just finding out that today (Friday, December 18) is the last day you can watch the Mark Morris Dance Company’s Nut Parody Hard nut online for free! Other online Nutcracker include the SF Ballet ($ 49, on request), San Jose Nutcracker’s Home for the Holidays ($ 15, on request) and the Berkeley Ballet Theater (free, Sunday, Dec. 20, 5 p.m. PT).
