Nvidia’s next high-end RTX GPU – possibly the Nvidia RTX 3080 – could get closer to the exit. That’s according to regulatory documents filed in South Korea, suggesting a launch is imminent ahead of an Nvidia event slated for September 1.
A report of Videocardz said the Korea National Radio Research Agency has certified a board designated PG133A. This card is rumored to be the Founder’s Edition of the RTX 3080 Ti (or RTX 3090) which will be the flagship of NVIDIA’s next successor to the RTX 2000 line.
Rumors have been swirling around Nvidia’s next generation of enthusiast-level GPUs. However, very few concrete details have emerged. Even the official name of the Ampere range is a mystery.
Some say the flagship card will follow the naming scheme that Nvidia has used for years and will be called RTX 3080 Ti. However, others claim that the card will dispense with the Ti brand and debut as the RTX 3090. It’s unclear at this point which direction Nvidia will take, but details should help us fix this soon.
In the two years since the arrival of the RTX 2000 series, few games have taken advantage of the ray tracing capabilities introduced with cards. Despite the raw power of the RTX 2080 Ti, even it struggles with raytracing while still maintaining a playable frame rate at resolutions above 1080p. Technologies like DLSS have helped alleviate these performance issues, but gamers have been frustrated with having to compromise while owning Nvidia’s most powerful GPU.
One of the biggest questions with the RTX 3080 Ti / RTX 3090 is whether it will have the power to provide UHD raytracing without having to sacrifice framerate or other aspects of graphics fidelity. With the next PS5 and Xbox Series X game consoles with DXR support, we could finally see a respectable number of titles benefiting from raytracing.
Nvidia’s high-end cards come at a steep price, and GPUs are rumored to continue. The performance per dollar of the RTX 3080 Ti / RTX 3090 will therefore be a major concern for potential buyers.
We probably won’t have to wait long for details on Nvidia’s upcoming GPUs. If the PG133A is really the RTX 3080 Ti / RTX 3090, it lines up with the countdown announced by Nvidia on Twitter and the GeForce event scheduled for September 1 at noon EDT. There’s a little over a week left before we can stop these rumors and see what really happens.
