The latest GPU market report for Q2 2021 has been released by JPR, showing that Intel and NVIDIA are increasing their respective market share while AMD is decreasing.
NVIDIA discrete GPU market share climbed to 83% from 17% for AMD in Q2 2021, Intel and NVIDIA GPU market shipments increased
According to JPR (Jon Peddie Research), PC GPU shipments reached 123 million units in the second quarter of 2021. Market shipments increased 3.4% sequentially and 37% year-over-year , while processor shipments also saw a significant increase of 42% over the previous year. The research company estimates that the GPU market will continue to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 3.5% from 2020 to 2025 and reach a total of 3,318 million units by the end of the forecast period. .

- The overall GPU attachment rate (which includes integrated and discrete GPUs, desktops, laptops and workstations) to PCs for the quarter was 117%, down -0.1% from report to the previous quarter.
- The overall PC processor market grew 3.5% quarter over quarter and 42.1% year over year.
- Desktop graphics expansion cards (AIBs that use discrete GPUs) were down -2.9% from the previous quarter.
- This quarter saw a 3.4% increase in tablet shipments compared to the previous quarter.
When it comes to vendor specific shipments in Q2 2021, Intel led the GPU segment with a 68.29% share (up from 68.18% last quarter). NVIDIA followed with a slight increase in its overall GPU share which currently stands at 15.23% (from 15.17% last quarter), while AMD’s GPU share has fallen to 16.48% ( against 16.65% in the last quarter). Overall GPU shipments were up 3.4% from last quarter, with AMD shipments increasing 2.3%, Intel’s 3.6% and NVIDIA’s 3.8%.
In a year like no other, suppliers reported shortages of components, capacitors, substrates and other items. Even companies with a diverse portfolio were forced to allocate to the different segments they served. No one was happy with that, and unfortunately the next build-up for the holiday season which typically takes place in the third quarter will be limited until the supply chain catches up with demand.

Note that the figures mentioned above include all GPUs (iGPU / dGPU). NVIDIA and AMD are currently the only two major companies to offer discrete graphics cards, but Intel will soon follow with its new line of ARC graphics cards which will be released in the first quarter of 2022. As for the share of discrete GPU, the share NVIDIA’s market share rose to 83% (up 81% last quarter) while AMD’s share fell to 17% (from 19% last quarter).

NVIDIA has managed to allocate its resources to accelerate the production of Ampere GPUs featured in the GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards while AMD is going through a tough time due to constraints on TSMC’s 7nm node which is being engulfed by other products from AMD and its competitors. . It looks like the following quarters through 2022 would largely stay the same, as NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang hinted.
