Google’s Android TV has long been an attractive platform in part because it lacked blatant publicity. That is starting to change with a row of ‘highlights’ on the homescreen unfolding, but it seems possible that Nvidia’s Shield TV is free from these ads.
This week, a few app updates on Android TV saw home screen ads rolling out for most users of the platform. Personally, they’ve arrived on every Android TV device in my house except one – the Shield TV in my living room.
Looking around the reports from users on Reddit and a few other Shield owners I know, this seems to be true for everyone. For some reason, the Nvidia Shield TV models just don’t seem to be receiving the new ads on the Android TV home screen. When updated with the latest Core Services and Home apps – 2.12-320114979-f and 2.13-320113730-f respectively – the Shield keeps the Home screen as it always has been, ad-free and focused on applications.
why is this the case? Honestly, we’re not entirely sure. Google has not provided any details that would give the impression that “highlights” are optional. In fact, we were told basically the opposite when the company said it couldn’t be deactivated. However, that doesn’t explain why Shield TVs just don’t get this new line.
We reached out to Nvidia to see if they could clarify matters, but the company had no comment to offer on this.
Based on the available evidence, it appears that Shield TV is free from Android TV ads, but we cannot know for sure. Someday the “Highlights” line might come to Shield owners but, at the very least, they don’t arrive alongside other models.
