NY eyeing Dennis Schroder, Reggie Jackson?

The New York Knicks may not yet be available in free agency.

SNY’s Ian Begley reported that NY may be looking at some of the remaining playmaker options, with Reggie Jackson and Dennis Schroder being the names to watch. New York appears to be “active” in its pursuit of a point guard.

Knicks Rumors: Would Reggie Jackson Or Dennis Schroder Make Sense?

The Knicks have already filled much of their roster.

New York’s biggest and only new acquisition was Evan Fournier, whom they signed on to a 4-year contract with a team option with the third year. They also re-signed Alec Burks, Derrick Rose and Nerlens Noel for 3-year contracts – all with options in the 3rd year.

While some may think New York is done spending, there are valid questions that remain with the point guard.

Derrick Rose was just spectacular last season, but he’s clearly better suited for a 6th man type role. No one from Leon Rose to Tom Thibodeau to Derrick Rose himself wants Derrick Rose to play 35 minutes per game as the team’s playmaker.

If anything, the New York Knicks are still exploring adding someone to reprise Elfrid Payton’s role as a playmaker who can set the tone. The remaining options appear to be Reggie Jackson and Dennis Schroder.

NY would have been on Kendrick Nunn, who ultimately decided to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.

For Jackson and Schroder, this is a short-term deal. They might be in a good position to strike a deal.

Schroder reportedly sought a long-term lucrative deal, but the market dried up. A 1 + 1 balloon deal may be the only thing on the table for Schroder or Jackson, unless they decide to take less and join one of the teams vying for the championship.

The Knicks actually have a lot of the change to offer – Derrick Rose’s bird rights, along with the Taj Gibson deal not counting in the cap, gives NY money to offer. Definitely more than most teams, although they still have to be creative.

Adding a talent like Schroder or Jackson could prove to be the right move for New York. As the roster sits right now, they’ll have to lead players like Immanuel Quickley, Miles McBride and Luca Vildoza to the point guard. If Derrick Rose were to get injured, their playmaking options and overall depth of custody would be very slim.

Stay tuned, New York may strike a new deal sooner rather than later.
