NYC, Tri-State ready for another round of snow

NEW YORK (WABC) – Road crews are ready to roll as authorities have closed some outdoor restaurants and closed vaccination centers for the day in anticipation of snow on Sunday.

New York City Sanitation Commissioner Edward Grayson has asked drivers to stay off city streets.

“What we’re going to do is redeploy the 715 salt spreaders and 2,000 plowed vehicles to respond to tomorrow’s event,” Grayson said. “Emergency snow workers, who also do part of the manual digging and shoveling in collaboration with the city, who will come back into play on Monday.”

Sanitation department officials said they have 200,000 tons of salt on hand, and the city doesn’t expect any surprises with this storm, but there are an additional 100 plows waiting just in case.

Meals on the pavement and open streets are suspended Sunday and a dangerous travel advisory goes into effect. However, sidewalk dining is open to anyone who wishes to dine outside in a snowstorm.

“There are no reported changes to ferry or transit times. Again, we’ll keep you posted if that changes based on weather conditions,” said Emergency Management Commissioner Deanne Criswell .

The by-law on alternative lateral parking will be suspended until Friday, February 12.

The Ministry of Buildings has advised all builders, contractors, crane operators and landowners to secure their construction sites, buildings and equipment.

The ministry said it would conduct random spot inspections of construction sites around the city and take action if the sites are not secured.

In New Jersey, transportation officials are taking a proactive approach to the forecast snowstorm.

Travel restrictions for commercial vehicles went into effect at 6 a.m. on several interstate highways.

These restrictions do not apply to the NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, or Atlantic City Expressway.

The same officials encouraged all motorists, not just commercial drivers, to stay off the roads and enjoy their Sunday at home.

On Long Island, Nassau County Director Laura Curran says she is ready for more snowfall.

“Every time we get a new projection, we get more and more inches,” she says. “So we’ll be watching this and following it very carefully.”

Curran says she expects the storm system to be weaker than the one that hit Long Island last week.

“No strong wind, no flooding is expected,” Curran said.

Nassau County is teeming with 13,000 tonnes of road salt, according to Curran.

“We used 7,000 tonnes of road salt for the last storm,” she said. “So that sounds like a lot, but you get through it pretty quickly.”
Curran says she was proud of the performance of the crews during the last storm.

“I am very confident that they can handle everything,” she said.

Responsible for 1,500 miles of track, Currans says they’ll be ready to go with DPW trucks, 115 snow trucks, over 30 pickup trucks and payloaders, and three brine trucks.

The Long Island vaccination sites at Stony Brook and Jones Beach will be closed Sunday due to snow.

Governor Cuomo said appointments on Long Island will be postponed until next week.

“If you have a date, you won’t lose your spot,” Cuomo said, calling for patience.

For now, it looks like the school will be open on Monday.
