NYPD exit video shows woman physically attacks teenager she says stole her phone

Harrison tweeted the clip from multiple hotel camera angles, showing a woman in a light-colored cap rushing at someone who appears to be Harrison’s son in a red cap. The woman grabs him by the waist and the two fall to the ground.

CNN requested the unedited video from both the NYPD and the Arlo Hotel and declined to provide a copy.

Harrold and his son are black and were guests at the hotel in lower Manhattan. It is unclear what the woman’s ethnicity in the video is, although New York Police have labeled her White.

Harrold’s video of the meeting was shared widely on social media, sparking an outcry over what many believed was another incident of racial profiling against black men. The hotel apologized and called the woman’s behavior “an unfounded accusation, prejudice and assault on an innocent guest.”

Harrold said in an Instagram post that he and his son left their hotel room for breakfast when they met the woman.

The teenager’s parents, Keyon Harrold Jr., and their attorney Ben Crump said Wednesday they are meeting with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. They told CNN’s Don Lemon that the prosecutor told them the video was worse than what the father posted on Instagram on Sunday.

Parents and their lawyer claim the incident was racially motivated, but the NYPD said Tuesday it was not investigated as a crime of bias.

After viewing the surveillance video, investigators plan to charge the woman with assault and possibly robbery or attempted theft, Harrison said Tuesday.

The woman’s phone was returned to her at the hotel moments after the incident by a carpool vehicle she used before trying to check into the hotel, according to Harrison.

The woman has not come forward, but CNN was the first news organization to speak to her by phone on Tuesday. She took issue with Harrold’s account of what had happened.

While the 22-year-old claimed she was assaulted during the altercation, CNN was unable to corroborate her account with investigators or with the hotel where the incident took place.

In a 20-minute phone interview in which she acted erratically and at times disjointed, she said the incident happened after she first asked to see the hotel’s surveillance video to try to figure out who might have picked up their phone.

She says she then asked someone else in the hotel lobby to “empty his pocket,” before finally confronting Keyon Harrold Jr., who she said had his phone in his pocket.

“That’s when it all got a bit more serious,” the woman said, referring to the interaction.

The woman said she would be willing to cooperate, speak with the NYPD and the Harrold family. CNN has made repeated and unsuccessful attempts to contact the woman since Tuesday.
