O 'Rourke defends Buttigieg after rowdy anti-gay messages during Dallas campaign

O'Rourke, a former Texas Senate candidate, wrote on Twitter that his country of origin "does not defend this kind of homophobia and hate."

"Mr. Mayor, we are grateful to you for coming to Texas and hope to see you again soon, as well as Chasten," O'Rourke wrote to Buttigieg, a homosexual, and her husband, Chasten.

O'Rourke's message came after several interruptions of Buttigieg during his speech at the Johnson Jordan dinner of the Dallas County Democratic Party by some who seemed to be shouting anti-gay messages, according to the same source. The Texas Tribune.

Hecklers shouted to Buttigieg to "repent" and shouted that "the wedding is a man and a woman," according to a video posted on Twitter by CNN reporter DJ Judd.

Buttigieg, a veteran, reportedly survived the interruption, noting how he packed his bags to serve in Afghanistan "to defend his freedom of speech."

He at one point felt that it was "an animated piece" and later added that "he just thought of this scripture that says bless and curse not", reported the Tribune.

Buttigieg, the only openly gay candidate in the 2020 race, faced public and personal attacks on his sexuality during the election campaign.

Last month he was confronted by two protesters in Iowa shouting biblical references to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, which according to the Bible were destroyed by what she calls sinful acts, including sodomy.

"The good news is that the condition of my soul is in the hands of God, but Iowa caucuses are at your expense," said Buttigieg at the time. "Do not forget the beauty of our democracy, everyone here has exactly the same voice and the same vote, it feels like the numbers are on our side," he added.
