Oak Park 4-star DT Rayshaun Benny withdraws from MSU and signs with Michigan

Michigan met a primary need in the 2021 category on Wednesday, and did so by knocking down a prospect of its rival in the state.

Oak-Park four-star defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny, who had been verbally engaged in Michigan state since November, signed with the Wolverines on Wednesday, February’s traditional signing day.

The 6-foot-5, 275-pounder seemed to have changed her mind belatedly. He told the Detroit News on Tuesday that he plans to sign with the Spartans, but the Wolverines and their revamped coaching staff continued to build a strong push.

Benny, who has 32 tackles and 5-1 / 2 sacks in five games this season, becomes the Wolverines’ top-ranked defensive prospect in the 2021 category at No. 195 overall, according to the 247 Sports Composite Ranking. He is No. 6 overall in Michigan.

Michigan didn’t pick up any defensive tackle prospects early in the signing period in December, but added two four-stars to the position last week. Jersey City (NJ) George Rooks of St. Peter’s Prep signed up against the Wolverines last Wednesday.

Benny joins Rooks, four-star Kechaun Bennett, three-star TJ Guy and three-star Dominick Giudice as defensive linemen in Michigan’s 2021 category. Bennett, Guy, and Giudice are all listed as endings, although Giudice will likely move indoors at the college level.

Meanwhile, MSU is losing its best prospect in Mel Tucker’s 2021 class. Benny was his only 2021 rookie not signed in December.

Michigan’s 2021 22-member class moves up one place to 10th in the national rankings, while MSU drops to 48th. Jim Harbaugh and his team are also in the mix to return another defensive tackle prospect on Wednesday. All four predictions from 247Sports Crystal Ball are in favor of the landing of three-star Ikechukwu Iwunnah in Michigan, Garland (Texas) Lakeview Centennial, who engaged in Colorado on January 19.
