A stunning demo for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has revealed new details about early ideas for Nintendo’s N64 masterpiece – like Link being able to become his fairy Navi.

The demo in question was found on an old N64 development cartridge used to contain the Nintendo F-Zero X racer. Upon closer inspection, files relating to a demo version of Zelda from 1997 were also found, partly preserved but some still intact.

The details have now been enthusiastically shared by the Forest of Illusion Twitter account, dedicated to the preservation of lost pieces of Nintendo history. There is a lot to see.

First, a series of magical spell medallions that granted revealing effects, like the soul medallion that allowed Link to “become Navi and fly”.

Other medallions allow Link to launch light attacks or hide in a cloak of darkness to avoid enemies. Another medal let Link warp when in danger, while two others let him create and put out fire.

Here are details on how Link would transform into Navi via the Soul Medallion:

Fans even translated some of the text found in the game and suggested that early versions of Ocarina’s plot would have played out very differently.

For example, the Deku tree was going to be a prison for the fairies in the game – including Navi – which Link would then free.

We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more on the leak, although fans examining its files have warned that the ROM is only partially complete. Presumably, this early version was not intended for the public eye, which is why the cartridge was later reused to store the F-Zero.
