Ocasio-Cortez says the reduction of military and economic aid to Israel "can be discussed"

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez believes that the United States should consider reducing military and economic aid to Israel – and that Jewish Democrats are calling for it.

"I think it's something that can be discussed," she said Sunday on Yahoo's "Skullduggery" podcast, adding that the idea should "definitely" be on the table.

"I think this is part of the conversations we have in our caucus," added the congressman. "I hope to play a facilitating role in this conversation and a supportive role in this conversation. But I also know that there are people who run for a long time, as a member of Congress [Betty] McCollum. "

Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) then described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a "Trump-like character" following his announced plan to formally annex Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

"I think we are really seeing a rise in authoritarianism around the world," she said.

The Jewish Democratic Council of America issued a statement on Monday, ripping Ocasio-Cortez for his comments.

"We are delighted that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recognizes that she is NOT a leader of Israel in Congress," the statement said. "We recommend dialogue with Democracy leaders Eliot Engel, Nita Lowey and Ted Deutch before considering the future of US military aid to Israel. US-Israeli relations must prevail over politics. "
