Octavia Spencer apologized for a comment she made on Britney Spears’ Instagram post announcing her engagement to her fiance Sam Asghari, saying her intention was to “make them laugh.”

Earlier this week, Spears posted a video on her since-disabled Instagram page announcing that she and her longtime boyfriend Asghari are planning to tie the knot.

Spencer joked in the comments that Spears should get Asghari to sign a prenuptial agreement. Considering that Spears has long struggled to gain control of her own finances and be released from a 13-year-old guardianship, the remark has gone viral.

On Wednesday, Spencer posted on his own Instagram to clarify his initial comment.

“All of you, a few days ago Sam and Britney announced their engagement and me being me I made a joke,” she captioned a happy photo of Spears and Asghari. “My intention was to make them laugh, not hurt them. I contacted this lovely couple privately to apologize and now want to restore just a hint of happiness they were deprived of. Britney fans saw her go through a lot of pain and she found happiness. We are thrilled for it. So let’s show them love.

She also hashtagged her post #nonnegativity.

Asghari was a good player about the whole affair and commented on Spencer’s post, saying she was “very kind to clarify” but there was “no hard feelings”.

“Jokes and misconceptions accompany the territory,” he wrote, alongside a few supporting emojis.
