Ex-mets Octavio Dotel and Luis Castillo were reportedly arrested for drug trafficking in their country, the Dominican Republic.
The two former Amazons have also been associated with a network against money laundering, according to the Attorney General of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Jean Rodriguez. They were shot dead in an operation described as "the largest operation against organized crime" in the history of the Dominican Republic.
The details are still incomplete, but information is emerging regarding the arrests, the alleged crimes and the type of properties seized.
Dotel, who also pitched for the Yankees, was stopped Tuesday morning, according to CDN.com. The point of sale also indicated that much of the drug traffic was taking place in the nightclubs.
Dominican authorities said Dotel, 45, and Castillo, 43, belonged to a powerful drug gang that was dismantled on Tuesday. According to Antonio Puesan, 20 luxury apartments, 15 discotheques and 10 restaurants were seized. Hector Gomez of Periodista Deportivo added that Dotel had four cars seized.
Dotel was 59-50 years old with an average career of 3.78 in 15 years. He has played for 13 major league teams, the all-time record of all time since he was adopted by Edwin Jackson. He joined the Mets in 1999 and defended the Yankees in 2006.
Castillo – not the current As of the Reds – was also stopped. The three-star player has been retired since 2010, after beating .290 in his 14-year career with the Mets, Blue Jays, Marlins and Twins.
