Oculus, vice president of Mobile, Max Cohen left Facebook this week, according to a LinkedIn page on his behalf and a report from Variety.

Cohen was one of the oldest executives of Oculus. He joined the team in February 2014, a month before Facebook acquired the company. According to Cohen's LinkedIn pagewas responsible for mobile services for Oculus, responsible for Oculus products for mobile and platforms, and responsible for AR / VR Media products".

The initial effort on which Cohen worked was Gear VR, the first VR mobile headset, made in partnership with Samsung. Like Google Cardboard and its plastic derivatives, users insert their smartphone in the screen and the computer. Unlike cardboard, however, it features a dedicated gyroscope and accelerometer, and uses the same Oculus Mobile platform and store as the Oculus Go.

At the first Oculus Connect conference, eight months after joining the company, Cohen made a presentation entitled "Getting Started With Gear VR". Next year at Oculus Connect 2, along with Peter Koo, he introduced the Gear VR consumer software.

Cohen's LinkedIn profile also indicates that he has directed the Oculus Go standalone helmet project and launched the Oculus Quest self-sustaining project. Cohen seems to have been a major force in Facebook's mobile VR efforts.

"It's an existential crisis for us to make sure we're managing the data properly," Cohen said of the privacy features that Facebook was working on.

This departure comes just a week after Facebook's departure from Nate Mitchell, the final co-founder.

Cohen's LinkedIn page indicates that he is now an "explorer" who "learns new skills". Whatever his next move, his work has certainly marked the evolution of mobile and autonomous virtual reality.
