Oculus presents its latest prototypes of new generation helmets – TechCrunch

Wednesday, at the developers conference, Oculus presented a pair of prototypes for its next high-end helmets.

Two years ago, Oculus unveiled its Half Dome prototype, which used a technology called variable focus lenses to allow users to adjust focus areas of the image. It is a technology similar to that used by Magic Leap on its headphones, but designed to allow a much wider range of focal planes.

The company introduced two new prototypes, including a "Half Dome 2" prototype and a "Half Dome 3" prototype.

"Half Dome 2" is optimized for weight and size, significantly reducing the form factor of the previous prototype while reducing the weight by 200 grams. The device also reduces the 140-degree field of view of the first design, although the company says the headset will still have a FoV 20% wider than the Rift.

The headset always uses a system that mechanically moves the lenses inside the headset to adjust the focus, but Oculus also looks further down the line.

"Half Dome 3" has incorporated the technology of its previous designs with an electronic varifocal module that has no moving parts and incorporates multiple stacked objectives that can be turned on and off to allow users to move through different focus planes (the Helmet company could switch between 64 focus plans with this configuration). This will allow users to view the elements developed at closer distances and let the headsets function more like human eyes.

No timetable has been set for the production of the prototype, but Oculus is clearly investing in the high-end still in Facebook Reality Labs.
