Facebook has announced that its long-awaited support for multiple user accounts and device-specific app sharing is headed for Oculus Quest 2 starting next month.
The company says in a developer blog post that the upcoming “ multi-user ” feature will allow you to add up to three sub accounts to a single device. In addition, “ Application Sharing ” will give primary account holders the ability to share their application library between these secondary local profiles. Shared apps will allow users to maintain distinct gameplay progression and their own profile specific achievements.
Multi-user accounts and app sharing will land first on Oculus Quest 2 as experimental features in February, and then on the original 2019 quest at an unspecified later date. Like all new Oculus users, all secondary users on a device must sign in with Facebook.
The company claims that at some point in the future, its upcoming app sharing feature will also allow a master account holder to share apps with three other devices at any given time. It’s ostensibly aimed at households with more than one Oculus headset, but Facebook hasn’t said how it plans to enforce it.
Additionally, sub account holders will be able to purchase their own apps and content on a shared device, but they won’t be able to share them with anyone. Only primary account holders will be able to share between their secondary device profiles.
The company says its new features “will help develop the VR community, promote [Oculus Store] and help prevent piracy. It is also said to increase home use and create “better long-term developer engagement.”
All new apps submitted to the Oculus Store after February 13 will need to enable app sharing. Developers who posted before that date can turn off app sharing, but they must do so before February 12, otherwise it gets applied automatically.
