In another of his increasingly frequent Instagram AMAs, Facebook VP of Augmented and Virtual Reality Andrew ‘Boz’ Bosworth hinted at the potential of a new Quest Pro model and discussed others. upcoming features.
A user asked Bosworth a question that said, “Why can’t Oculus make a $ 600 headset and put the best specs like Quest Pro 3 etc plz.” Bosworth then said “Quest Pro, eh… Interesting…” and winked at the camera.
While Quest Pro is an interesting prospect and clearly a teasing answer, it shouldn’t be taken as a confirmation of the idea. Nonetheless, Facebook says Quest 2 is heading towards mainstream acceptance while aggressively targeting a low price for a gaming product people want. It is certainly possible now that the market is proven that Facebook might consider differentiating the range with a higher spec model.
Bosworth also responded to a question asking if there were “plans to implement eye tracking on Oculus Quest.” He said eye tracking is a “super interesting” area that Facebook has been studying for a long time, and that “it’s something that we’ll be building into a future headset.” He went on to point out that one of the main advantages of eye-tracking technology is that you can “dramatically improve performance by rendering only those elements that are in the fovea field of view.”
“I’m definitely happy they are making one,” Bosworth said of Sony’s confirmation of a next-generation headset. “PSVR has been a huge success and has been a huge place for our developers to make money and I hope PSVR 2 is too.”
Bosworth also touched on app sharing, a new quest feature, and why it’s currently not available for Beat Saber. “One thing that’s really tricky about Beat Saber and other music-oriented software is the licensing and how that licensing model works. So we are still under review and will let you know more when we have it. “
Regarding the return of Virtual Desktop PC VR streaming to the official Oculus Store earlier this week, Bosworth said that after being “very conservative” on the quality control of the store’s content during from the launch of Quest, it hands the consumers. He also noted that “so many people” were loading the alternate version of Virtual Desktop through SideQuest that bringing it back to the official store was now “kind of a no brainer.”
