San Diego Gas & Electric was ordered to begin blackouts Monday that could have affected 100,000 customers, but the electricity crisis was averted at the last moment.

“Rotary outages have been averted in San Diego and southern Orange Counties today, in part thanks to local residents and businesses who have answered the call to reduce energy use amid a prolonged heat wave and unusually high energy demand, ”the utility said in a statement.

The California independent system operator, which manages the transmission of high voltage power across the state, had warned SDG & E and other utilities that it was very likely they would be ordered to shut down implementation of rotating failures.

“The number of affected SDG & E customers could exceed 100,000 today,” the utility said at 3:45 p.m. “Customers should expect to be without power for about an hour.”

Critical facilities such as hospitals, police and fire stations were to be exempt from power cuts, as well as communities in high-risk fire districts.

A list of the affected areas and associated circuit numbers was posted on the SDG & E website. But in the end, no power outages were ordered.

The utility urged residents to continue their efforts to conserve energy, saying conservation remains of critical importance to avoiding the need for rotary interruptions, as well as shortening the duration of blackouts.

Given the severity of the weather and grid conditions, it is possible that more widespread rotating outages could occur statewide in the coming days ”. SDG & E said.

CASIO urged Californians to take the following steps to limit electricity consumption:

  • Set the air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees
  • Defer the use of major household appliances
  • Turn off unnecessary lights
  • Unplug unused electrical appliances
  • Close blinds and curtains
  • Use fans when possible
  • Limit the opening time of the refrigerator door
