Lorne Lanning and the Oddworld Inhabitants development team managed. No big publishers. No time in a hurry. No creative compromise. The next entry in the quintology still planned (take this, Alien Quadrilogy!) Oddworld games is finally well launched after the voluntary closure of the studio in 2005, which had brought a lot of money to the old games Abe selling well on PC, reopened the studio, and funded the New and Tasty remake, which brought us here, to Oddworld: Soulstorm.

My first thought in getting a demo of Lanning's Soulstorm was its beauty. It is clear that the inhabitants have experience in the cinema, because the gameplay and especially the cinematics resemble those of a game with a budget four times higher. Speaking of these cinematics, I saw the first one, which begins again towards the end of the story; Soulstorm will take you back to the beginning of the story and catch you later. This adventure will tell the legend of Abe and his followers: runaway slaves, fugitives on the run, who fight on the verge of extinction.

It's still an action-adventure 2.5D, with the possibility of approaching the game from a stealthy or aggressive avenue. You can see multiple layers in the environment and see NPCs busy with routines. And yes, you sometimes come back to these other places as each level progresses. Weapons are consumer products turned into firearms, Lanning describing them as a "candy colored shop". The whole plot of Soulstorm revolves around Soulstorm Brew, an energizing drink with devilish purpose that will unfold mysteriously over the course of the campaign. (Scream at Sunset Overdrive!)

Ammunition, on the other hand, may have specially designed features that make them unique, like using more rubber bands on the jawbreaker to bounce it enough to enter a nook of the environment, thus distracting the guy which monitors the switch to which you are trying to access. which, once returned, will bring you a mobile platform. Everything is scheduled to add 12 to 15 hours to the initial phase, with up to 100 hours – as Lanning says – to go back, replay and collect everything and see everything. Not bad for a game that aims for a price of $ 40!
