CLEVELAND, Ohio – Odell Beckham Jr. has a good chance of making his 2021 debut against the Bears, a source told cleveland.com, which will make it easier to lose Jarvis Landry to an MCL sprain for likely at least a few weeks.
Landry, the inspirational leader of the Browns, is listed week to week and coach Kevin Stefanski said “we’ll see” when asked if he would be placed in the injured reserve, which requires a minimal absence of three games. NFL Network has reported that Landry will be missing for approximately 2-3 weeks, which is considered a ballpark figure.
Stefanski has made it clear that Beckham’s return will not be tied to Landry’s absence and that they will assess him on his own merits. He said he would reconsider Beckham’s status on Wednesday when the 1-1 Browns begin to seriously plan for the Bears, and go from there.
“We will continue to take him and see when he is ready to go,” Stefanski said.
But a source said Beckham should be ready to try his luck at FirstEnergy Stadium on Sunday, provided his training week goes well and he feels confident about his return.
Landry and Beckham engaged in a Twitter exchange on Monday that made it look like Beckham was getting ready to play.
“Every time I put this corset on someone is going to have to pay for it in the near future,” Landry tweeted.
“We are waiting for slimeballl! Keep this pain on you… we’ll keep it going, ” Beckham responded.
Of course, it will be primarily up to Beckham to make the final decision, and no one can predict what he will feel like entering the pitch for the first time since undergoing surgery to repair his torn ACL on November 10. . The Browns were confident Beckham would feel ready to play the opening game in Kansas City based on his practices and medical evaluations. But when the time came, he didn’t feel up to it and opted for the inactive list.
Stefanski then ruled him out for the Texans game on Wednesday rather than leaving him hanging until game day again.
But even security Grant Delpit, Beckham’s former colleague former LSU Tiger, seems confident that Beckham will soon be ready to go and ease the sting of Landry’s absence.

Delpit, coming off an Achilles break that cost him all of last season, wanted to play Kansas City, but the coaching staff backed him down. “It turned out to be the best decision we could make,” said Delpit.
Making his NFL debut on Sunday against the Texans, Delpit made five tackles, nearly knocked out rookie quarterback Davis Mills and sacked him in the fourth quarter for a 9-yard loss. The Browns did not recover, but it did lead to a missed field goal of 41 yards, which would have taken the score to 31-24 with 1:59 to go.
The extra week off made all the difference for Delpit, and so could Beckham, who especially needs to question himself after such an important operation, and after having undergone three operations since 2017, including one in ankle and one to repair a sports hernia.
Again, Beckham, who turns 29 in November, could be in his final season here given his $ 15 million cap for next season and the lack of cap space, meaning that the Browns could let him go without suffering a financial blow. He made it clear in a July 25 interview at his youth football camp in Gates Mills, Ohio, that he would return to the field on his own terms.
“I think what I used to get drawn into – which led me down a path that I will never come back to – is you getting hurt and we are all men and we want to show everyone that we are a man and we want to come back, “he said.” It (becomes) this whole ego challenge. Baker Mayfield also has a big game threat with David Njoku, two more great tight ends to Austin Hooper and Harrison, and a pass return to Kareem Hunt, so losing Landry isn’t a disaster.
Even if Beckham is playing, he will likely be a field account, so people shouldn’t necessarily expect a monster game. The Browns will likely limit it to an upcoming set of games and go from there.
Nothing is final yet, but Beckham may well be ready on Sunday and give the local crowd the OBJ experience. If he does, Landry’s loss will hurt a little less.
