MOORESVILLE, N.C. – A police officer who was making a stop at the weekend was shot dead in North Carolina, authorities said on Sunday, adding that the suspect, an armed man, was found dead in his nearby apartment, injured Gunshot.
Officer Jordan Harris Sheldon, age 32, was shot around 10 pm. Saturday in Mooresville, a suburb of Charlotte, he died of his injuries after being transferred to the hospital, police said on his Facebook page. According to the police statement, the suspect fled the shooting and was then taken to the apartment where he was found dead.
Mooresville Police Chief Damon Williams identified the gunman as Michael Aldana, 28, of Mooresville. Aldana was known to the police, but not for acts of violence, Williams said at a press conference Sunday. The police chief declined to say what had prompted Sheldon to stop Aldana's vehicle and said that he did not immediately know the reason for the shooting.
Sheldon, a veteran of the department for six years, was one of the officers of the K9 department. He and his dog, Ramon, were on duty when the officer was killed, Williams said.
The chief stated that Sheldon was not married but was involved in a relationship.
"This is not a number for us – it's a real person, and we're sorry.The pain and sorrow we feel is – can not be expressed," said Mayor Miles Atkins , pushing back tears at the press conference. .
The mourners left flowers, balloons and an American flag with the Sheldon police vehicle, which was parked Sunday in front of the police department.
Sheldon was carrying a body camera that was working when he was killed, Williams said. He added that the police were reviewing the images during the investigation.
Mooresville is a city of about 38 000 inhabitants located about 45 km north of Charlotte.
