The Avalanche submitted their protected expansion project list on Saturday and it was released to the public on Sunday morning. The Seattle Kraken, the 32nd NHL team, will pick an unprotected Avalanche player in Wednesday’s expansion draft.

The Kraken will select 30 players on Wednesday, one from each team, with the exception of the Vegas Golden Knights, who were the previous NHL expansion team in 2017. The rules for the Vegas expansion draft are the same for Seattle.
The Kraken are to take 14 forwards, nine defenders and three goalies, and 20 of those players are to be under contract for the 2021-22 season. Seattle can select 10 free agents but risks losing unrestricted ones for nothing when free agency begins on July 28. However, he will have an exclusive window from Sunday to Wednesday to interview and potentially sign pending free agents.
Current teams cannot protect players with standstill clauses unless a player like Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson gives them up, as he did, to allow Colorado to protect defenders Cale Makar , Devon Toews and Sam Girard.
All first and second year NHL players and all unsigned draft picks are exempt from the expansion draft and are therefore not protected.
