CHAMBLEE, Georgia – A small plane crashed just after takeoff Friday afternoon from a suburban airport in the northeast suburbs of Atlanta, killing all four on board, authorities said.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the single-engine Cessna 210 crashed around 1:10 p.m. at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport and caught fire. All four people on board are dead, a county firefighter spokesperson said.
At least 15 firefighters stationed at the county-owned airport rushed to the runway and extinguished the flames relatively quickly, according to county fire chief Captain Jaeson Daniels, speaking to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Authorities did not immediately disclose the identity of those killed.
The airport is located on more than 700 acres (280 hectares) within 10 miles of downtown Atlanta. With an average of about 209,000 take-offs and landings annually over the past three decades, it is the second-largest airport in the state behind Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, according to its website.
The FAA said the National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation.
There was no immediate indication of what could have caused the accident.
