Lawyer Tony Buzbee said Friday night that 20 lawsuits have been filed against Texas quarterback Deshaun Watson. Officially, the number filed is now 18.

Via multiple reports, the seventeenth and eighteen assault lawsuits against Watson have now been filed. Presumably, numbers 19 and 20 will appear in the system soon.

Buzbee said he is assessing 24 potential claims in total.

In all cases, Watson will have a time limit to respond to the complaint, either with a response or with a motion to dismiss. Once a response is filed, the court will ultimately convene a planning conference to identify a trial date and then work backward to meet any other relevant deadlines.

Usually, civil lawsuits are tried within 18 months to two years after filing. For Watson, one of the first strategic questions will be whether to try to consolidate all cases or to defend each separately.

More immediately, and as we explained last week, Watson’s long-term best interests would be best served by finding a way to resolve all complaints to the satisfaction of all parties involved, as soon as possible. In a social media post on Friday night, however, Buzbee promised the cases would be resolved in court.

Ultimately, this is not his call. If one or more of its clients choose to accept Watson’s offer, one or more of the cases will certainly not go to court.
