The Panthers believed they had recovered a fumble from Dalton Schultz on the second play of the Cowboys’ third possession. Sean Chandler dropped the ball from the stretch and Brian Burns recovered for the Panthers at Dallas 37.
But the replay knocked him over, with Schultz’s knee visibly lowered after gaining 12 yards before the ball came out.
Two games later, however, Schultz escaped. Jeremy Chinn was credited with the tackle, and it was clear on replay that the ball was out before Schultz was down with the Panthers clearly recovering. For some reason, however, officials decided that Schultz’s forward advance had come to a halt. It wasn’t, and Fox’s rules analyst Dean Blandino said officials made a mistake.
Forward progression is not revisable.
This gave the Cowboys a hold on the ball and Dak Prescott hit Blake Jarwin for a touchdown from 18 yards later in practice.
The Panthers took the 2-point conversion replay exam. After an illegal participation penalty at Carolina, Dallas went for 2 from the 1-yard line. Prescott passed Schultz and authorities ruled he crossed the plane before being tackled.
Replay correctly canceled a tight game, depriving the Cowboys of the 2 points. Thus, Dallas leads 13-7 in the second quarter.
