Ridge said the police had planned to get people out of the TD Garden on the city streets after the match – and create two celebration areas near the stadium for beloved fans.
He said the streets of Faneuil Hall and probably Kenmore Square would be closed to revelers, noting that in the latter case, he was lucky that students from the city had returned home during the summer.
Ridge warned that the police would not tolerate public consumption, marijuana use or property damage.
If the Bruins won, it would be the third major sports championship for fans in the region in less than a year. The Red Sox won the World Series last year and the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl earlier this year.
Boston is accustomed to appearances in major sports championships and has won a dozen over the past 18 years. Boston officials also learned how to handle the festivities and victories parades a few days later.
Officials urged people to use public transportation to get to the game. MBTA Transit Police Chief Kenneth Green said, "Consumption of alcohol or unruly behavior will not be tolerated on the MBTA."
