Oh hey, Metroid got a tweet for its 35th anniversary – Destructoid

Happy 35th, Samus

It’s crazy how Nintendo handles some of its golden franchises. I mean, they obviously have access to internal numbers and market research. But seeing how they occasionally release series like Easter Eggs or cameos for other games is fascinating. F-Zero is pretty much the perfect example of something that’s basically dead in the water, but Nintendo is proud to show off. For a while, Metroid fits this bill too. We are now at the point where Nintendo is celebrating a Metroid 35th anniversary, and we have a 2D and 3D game in the works. Go figure!

Yes, that day in Japan 35 years ago, Metroid has been freed. It blew me away after playing it (at least when it was released later in the US), and it changed the way I looked at platform games, which mostly consisted of games like Mario up to this point. Over the years I have followed Samus to the ends of the earth, through thickness and thinness, into the great unknown of Other M and Federation strength.

But a year later, after the Federation strength debacle, Samus returns came out, and things looked upbeat again. Four years later, Nintendo would announce Terror Metroid and the rest is currently history going, as we get into the Metroid 35th anniversary day and date, two months from the date of Fear. It was shaking for a while there, however! It took a full seven years to go from Other M To Samus returns, and it’s been 14 years since we saw a new Metroid Prime Game.

To see, Nintendo even recognized the Metroid 35th birthday in a tweet! Maybe a sign that things are back on track, as long as Fear and Metroid Prime 4 deliver.
