Oh, hey there: is it fair to criticize 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo after a win?

The phrase “good enough to win” is used frequently during a football season, especially with the San Francisco 49ers organization in recent seasons. In Week 2 against the Eagles, the offense struggled early on before gaining some momentum before half-time and eventually scoring 17 points. In today’s Oh, Hey There podcast, Leo Luna and Javier Vega questioned whether it was right to expect more from Jimmy Garoppolo.

Is it fair to criticize a quarterback after a win? Granted, Jimmy’s game couldn’t have been so bad if the team were still able to secure the win, right?

For Vega, the problems come more from what didn’t happen on the pitch than from what happened:

“There are times in this game where Kyle Shanahan makes it up – cover 2 beaters, cover 3 beaters – and Jimmy can’t hit those shots. Kyle Posey recently offered his take on the quarterback situation here and here and believes Shanahan prefers Garoppolo’s veteran presence. However, on today’s show, Javi and Leo took the opposite approach.

There doesn’t seem to be a happy medium in the 49ers fandom. Either you agree with Jimmy Garoppolo or you’re frustrated with the inconsistency and ready to roll the dice for a rookie quarterback.
