COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio state football is moving forward publicly with preparations for Saturday’s game in Illinois despite reports of an increase in the team’s positive tests for coronavirus.
Eleven Warriors reported that the football program was dealing with a “single digit case count” of COVID-19. Bucknuts first announced that Saturday’s game could be in jeopardy due to an unspecified increase in testing. Tim May of Lettermen Row reported players who tested positive were isolated.
An Ohio state spokesperson declined to comment on the information. Several Big Ten programs have been at the forefront of their COVID-19 test results and made them public. The state of Ohio has not disclosed any number of tests throughout the pandemic, citing an attempt to avoid identification of people who test positive.
It’s unclear if any Buckeye players were previously sidelined due to positive tests, and how many that might have increased over the past week.
Following the reports, the team’s official Twitter account posted a promotion for Saturday’s game, including the kick-off time at noon and the FS1 broadcast channel.
Ohio State players are receiving daily rapid antigen tests for COVID-19. If they are positive, they also pass a polymerase chain reaction test to confirm the initial result. The only public positive test came on October 31, when senior linebacker Justin Hilliard first tested positive on the rapid test, but was cleared by the PCR test.
According to Big Ten policy, “Test results must be completed and recorded prior to each practice or match.” Each school has appointed an infection manager to oversee the collection and reporting of test data to the league.
The state of Ohio publishes a situation report every Friday at 10 a.m. It does not distinguish between players unavailable for reasons of injury, illness or discipline.
Players newly tested positive this week will not be able to play in any of the last three games of the regular season, in accordance with the Big Ten’s policy of requiring 21 days out of competition. After Saturday at Illinois, OSU is scheduled to play at Michigan State on December 5 and at home against Michigan on December 12. The Big Ten Championship game would follow on December 19.
According to the Big Ten protocols, teams facing cases among more than 5% of team members and more than 7.5% of the program’s “population” – a combination of players, coaches, managers, coaches and other staff – must stop operations. Positive tests in the range of 2.5 to 5% for a team and 3.5 to 7.5% for the population mean that a program must change its practice and meeting schedule and “consider the viability of the continuation of the planned competition ”.

The state of Ohio had previously canceled a game – Nov. 14 in Maryland – due to an opponent’s COVID-19 outbreak. Maryland and the Big Ten canceled that game before they crossed those test thresholds. However, Maryland shut down operations over concerns of a possible larger outbreak, and its number of positive tests increased the following week.
A similar situation unfolded with Wisconsin, which contested its season opener but called off games against Nebraska and Purdue the following two weeks. Minnesota were forced to call off their game against the Badgers this week due to their own outbreak.
Further Ohio State cancellations would potentially jeopardize the Buckeyes’ ability to play in the Big Ten Championship game. The Big Ten have set a minimum of six games – or two less than the average number of games played, if that number drops below six – in order to qualify for the championship game.
