Dick and Shirley Meek, married for over 70 years, held hands as they died within minutes of each other from the novel coronavirus. Their favorite music played softly in the background.
“It was a beautiful disappearance,” reads an obituary from Fischer funeral home. “Their love affair for the ages. They had a fairytale ending … Our hearts are broken, but we are at peace knowing that they are together forever.”
The Ohio couple, 89 and 87, died on January 16 about a week after testing positive for coronavirus and were admitted to Riverside Hospital in Columbus, according to local media outlet WBNS. They were to receive the vaccine three days later.

“Mom came in first,” said Debbie Howell, a daughter of the couple. “They were holding hands. The nurse put mum’s head on my dad’s shoulder and she said to daddy ‘Dick it’s OK to let go now. Shirley is waiting for you “and he’s been by in a few minutes.”
Howell and her sisters Vicki Harper and Kelly Meek said WBNS precautions were lightened to celebrate the couple’s 70th wedding anniversary on December 22, after which the couple developed a cold. After their conditions quickly deteriorated in the hospital and no treatment options were left, hospital staff agreed to let the couple share a room so they could be together.
The obituary describes the couple as childhood lovers, who led a life of love and passion.
“Their life was a life of adventure – from skydiving to zipline, their to-do list was amazing !! Having a devout love for family, they always found time for each other. They all met each other. days, no matter where they were in the world, at 3pm for a date and a toast to each other, ”the obituary read.
“We have years of warm memories of New Year’s Eve parties, backyard meals, vacations, birthdays, beach days, annual Meek Family Game Show parties, silly family videos, of water skiing and boating, love, laughter and togetherness. Our life with their inspiration was a mad, mad rush !! “

The girls shared the couple’s story to urge others to stay safe amid the virus.
Dick, or Edwin Richard, Meek had served in the US Air Force as a sergeant and was a carpenter, while Shirley worked 25 years at Burger Chef and was an excellent cook and housewife, according to the obituary.
They are survived by five children, 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.
