The superintendent of an Ohio high school defended the district's decision to eliminate valedictorian and salutatorian honors in an effort to improve the mental well-being of their students.
Jonathan Cooper said Monday during an appearance in "America's Newsroom" that an outbreak of suicides at Mason City High School had forced the district to become aware of the unhealthy level of competition between students and to find ways to reduce their stress.
"While our community was examining some unhealthy patterns, the increase in anxiety, depression and suicide," he said. "This is the second leading cause of death among young people in America today, so we began to look at what we could do as heads of institutions to make a difference. "
The elimination of valedictorian and salutatorian will be replaced by honors similar to those of the university – summa cum laude, magna cum laude and cum laude. The district also announced that it would begin classes thirty minutes later.

In addition to academic changes, Cooper said he has also worked on wellness programs, including a peer suicide prevention program called "Help Squad".

Facilitator Bill Hemmer emphasized the possibility of reducing student stress by limiting the number of courses that children are allowed to follow. Cooper said the school did not want to limit their creative interests.
"Well, you know, we want our children to look for what they are passionate about," he said. "We do not want them to look for a magic number or an artificial goal here, we want them to pursue what interests them."
