If you’re worried about whether the Ohio State game at Michigan State gets played on Saturday, you can relax. The state of Ohio sent out a press release on Friday afternoon saying the Buckeyes are scheduled to travel to East Lansing on Friday night and the game is very close against the Spartans.
The No.4 Buckeyes (4-0) canceled their game at Illinois last Saturday due to COVID-19 issues within the program. Previously, OSU’s game in Maryland (slated for November 14) had been canceled due to COVID issues in the Terrapins program.
As of now, the Big Ten stipulates that teams must play a minimum of six games to be eligible for the Big Ten Championship Game. The Buckeyes are set to host Michigan next Saturday (December 12), but the Wolverines are currently facing their own COVID issues and have called off their game against Maryland that was scheduled for Saturday.
Ohio State Head Coach Ryan day tested positive for the virus last Friday and will not train the Buckeyes at East Lansing. Larry johnson was appointed OSU’s interim head coach. Johnson, who typically holds the title of assistant head coach / defensive line coach, will become the first black head coach in Ohio State football history.

Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State football team will travel to East Lansing, Mich. On Friday night before their Saturday game against the Michigan State Spartans. Kick-off at Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 12:06 p.m. on ABC.
Ohio State’s successful and safe return to the field of play began after its game against Illinois was canceled last weekend, with all team-related activities halted for two days following an increase in positive tests in the program. Risk mitigation efforts, such as virtual team meetings and small group training sessions, were stepped up when the team resumed operations at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
The medical staff of the Ohio State team, under the direction of Dr Jim Borchers, increased and improved COVID-19 testing this week. The team continues to be tested daily, according to Big Ten Conference protocols, and has improved its monitoring of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests throughout the week.
“We are confident that we are heading to East Lansing with a team that can compete safely and whose health, safety and well-being have been our greatest concern,” said Borchers. “We tested, monitored and evaluated our results on a daily basis and advised student-athletes, coaches and performance staff accordingly.
“Our population positivity rate, which broke the participation threshold at this time last week, has now returned to the seven-day moving average to a level that allows us to compete safely this weekend.”
The athletics department kept the Big Ten conference and Michigan State University updated during the week.
“We currently have student-athletes and staff on isolation or quarantine protocols,” Borchers said, “and everyone is recovering and doing fine.”
Head coach Ryan Day remains isolated and will not make it to the game. He can resume coaching in the field on Monday. Assistant head coach / defensive line coach Larry Johnson will act as interim head coach for the Buckeyes on Saturday.
