The state of Ohio has put all football-related activities on hiatus and closed the administrative offices of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center for a week due to an increase in positive coronavirus cases.
The decision announced Tuesday morning was made by athletic director Gene Smith and team chief medical officer Jim Borchers. They made the call following the latest round of PCR tests conducted on Monday.
“Our decisions regarding the well-being of our student-athletes, staff and those who come to our campus, and our determination as to when to reopen and resume operations, will continue to be guided by our medical staff, ”Smith said in a statement. . “We have managed to safely host nearly 100 sporting events on campus this year with limited disruption, but this pandemic is not over. We will continue to emphasize safety measures related to wearing masks, consistent and thorough handwashing, and physical distancing, and we will remain vigilant in these areas.
This is the first break for the football schedule since he had a four-day hiatus from team activities in late November.
It is not known how many positive cases there are – or have been – in the football program. The sports department has chosen not to release more specific statistics on COVID-19 test results beyond what the university as a whole is providing.
The state of Ohio is currently scheduled to begin spring football practices on March 19. If the Buckeyes are able to return to work in a week, they will return to Woody Hayes Athletic Center on March 16, giving them three days in the facility before. opening camp at the end of the week.
