A 14-year-old girl from Ohio drowned in a Middletown theme park on Tuesday, authorities said.
The teenager has been identified as Mykiara Jones, originally from Dayton, according to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office. MPs were called to the Land of Illusion adventure park around 5 p.m. after reports of a drowning of minors.
A rescuer spotted Jones about half an hour after he first fell. The teenager was rushed to Dayton Children’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead, the sheriff said.

The Associated Press reported Jones was not wearing a life jacket and fell into the water after being on a “jumping device,” officials said.
“This is a tragedy that no parent should have to endure,” said Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones. “These are the calls that first responders dread and find it difficult to handle. Our hearts and prayers are with the family.”
Life jackets are available in the park, although guests are not required to wear them, according to reports.
Jones was slated to be a freshman at Middletown High School and the teenager’s mother worked in the school system, according to Superintendent Marlon Styles.

The park was closed on Wednesday – out of respect for Jones, his family and the employees who “were also facing this tragedy,” according to a statement posted on his Facebook page.
“We fully support national and local authorities in their investigation of the incident,” the park said.

An investigation is underway.
