Jason Preston is not your ordinary basketball player.

The Ohio Bobcats point guard worked his tail for a chance at Division I basketball, and his backstory went viral on Friday as his team took on No.8 Illinois.

ESPN broadcasters shed light on his story during the game. Preston’s mother died about five years ago and while his father was not in the picture he moved to live with his mother’s best friend’s son in Orlando, Florida as his legal guardian was living in Jamaica.

He had no plans to play college basketball, but a friend of his convinced him to play in an AAU tournament and a coach convinced him to go to prep school before to go to college. At Believe Sports Academy, he started on the Level C basketball team and joined the Level A team before being demoted again.

After finding success at Level C, he made his own highlight reel and then received a scholarship offer from Ohio University.

He joined the Bobcats for the 2018-19 season and was part of the All-Mid-American Conference Freshman squad. In his second season, he was named to the All-MAC Second Team.

He started 57 of the 65 games he played for the Bobcats. He has averaged 12 points and 5.6 assists per game for his college career.

Preston responded to the praise he was receiving on social media.

He also lost 31 points in a 75-73 loss to Illinois on Friday night. But his story should be another reminder for anyone with college basketball aspirations never to give up.
