For Google phone and tablet users, this is both a loss of functionality and a significant security gain. Previously, you could say something like, "OK Google, what's the weather like today?" and your device will unlock your screen to open a weather app. Now you will need to unlock your device to go beyond the Google Assistant interface. Google chose not to include the "Unlock with Voice Match" feature when launching Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL this fall. At CES 2019, the company announced that it would remove this feature on all Android devices. Now, 9to5Google reports that Moto Z and Pixel XL lose their function with the Google App 9.27 update. Other devices with Google app 9.31 still seem to have the power to completely unlock the voice, but it seems that they will soon disappear. So, if you're one of Google's Android users who enjoyed searching for TripAdvisor hotels with TripAdvisor or sending messages without unlocking your phone, enjoy this feature as long as it lasts, but be aware that this change has the benefits of enhanced security.
