In a statement obtained by CNN affiliate KOKI, Matt Rowan said he “unfortunately made statements which cannot be repeated”.

He said he had type 1 diabetes and that during the game his blood sugar rose. He offered a “sincere apology” to everyone involved in the game and said it was “not unusual” for him to become disoriented and say inappropriate and hurtful things.

“Although the comments I have made seem to indicate that I am a racist, I am not,” he said. “I have never considered myself to be a racist and, in short, I cannot explain why I made these comments.”

The Tahlequah Public Schools Sports Department said in a statement that it hired the crew to broadcast the basketball tournament, but the crew were not part of Tahlequah High School or the sports department. The school system has terminated its contract with the company, TPS athletic director Matt Cloud said in the statement.

CNN has contacted Rowan’s attorney for further comment, but has not received a response.
