Oklahoma congressman allegedly threatened embassy staff as they tried to enter Afghanistan: report

Oklahoma Representative Markwayne Mullin reportedly threatened embassy staff in Tajikistan when they needed help transporting massive amounts of cash into the country, in their attempt to enter neighboring Afghanistan, according to a report.

Mullin, a Republican, was planning to hire a helicopter to enter Afghanistan and rescue five U.S. citizens – a woman and her four children, and he enlisted the ambassador’s help, The Washington Post reported. He needed help getting around Tajikistan’s laws on cash limits.

But when embassy officials told him no, Mullin allegedly threatened U.S. Ambassador to Tajikistan John Mark Pommersheim and embassy staff, according to the newspaper.

“To say it’s extremely dangerous is an understatement,” a State Department official told The Post. The nature of Mullin’s threats was not immediately clear.

Officials said Tuesday evening they did not know Mullin’s whereabouts. But Mullin spokeswoman Meredith Blanford later said Mullin “has been and is currently completely safe.” Blanford added that he and his office “will continue to do everything in our power to bring all Americans back from the war zone that President Biden has abandoned,” according to the Washington Post.

The office of Congressman Mullin, the office of Minority Parliamentary Leader Kevin McCarthy and the US State Department did not immediately respond to Fox News requests for comment late at night.

On Monday, the Pentagon announced that all US troops had left Afghanistan. The last members of the C-17 transport service departed the airport at 3:29 p.m. EST.

The US troop withdrawal met the August 31 deadline that the Biden administration agreed with the Taliban – officially ending America’s longest war.

Mullin tweeted on Monday that Americans stranded in Afghanistan must “defend themselves against terrorists invading the country.”

“One of the mottos of our military is ‘leave no one behind’,” he wrote. “But today, that’s exactly what President Biden did.”

It was the second time Mullin attempted to visit Afghanistan, the newspaper said. He visited Greece last week and requested permission to enter Afghanistan, but the Pentagon rejected his request to visit Kabul, an administration official said.

Last week, representatives Seth Moulton D-Mass. and Peter Meijer R-Mich., visited Afghanistan, prompting a reaction from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Democratic assistants in Congress.

U.S. officials, along with McCarthy and Pelosi, had urged people not to visit the area after Moulton and Meijer’s trip.

“You are putting yourself – not just yourself, but you are putting the Americans – at risk if the military is to protect you, which they will do,” McCarthy said, according to the Post.
