A new supply chain report suggests we’ll see OLED iPad Pro models in 2024, but there is great uncertainty about Apple’s plans for the various display technologies.
There is a potential four-step transition strategy for iPad displays, with Apple already moving to the second of these …
Background
Different display technologies can be confusing, so let’s start with a quick recap …
Previous generation iPad Pro displays, as well as current displays of other models, used IPS LCD panels with conventional LED backlighting.
Current generation models use IPS LCDs with miniLED backlighting, i.e. many more LEDs of much smaller size for more precise control of lit and unlit areas. We expect this technology to arrive on MacBook Pro models in the coming weeks.
We also know that Apple’s longer-term goal is to switch to microLED displays, which have more in common with OLED than with the backlit LCD display.
There are two things, however, that we don’t know for sure. One, when we see microLED iPads. This technology is at a fairly early stage of development and is expected to appear first in the Apple Watch. It could be many years before it hits iPads and MacBooks.
Second, whether Apple will switch directly from miniLED backlit LCDs to microLED displays, or if it will have OLED models in the meantime. The company currently uses OLED for the iPhone and Apple Watch.
Part of the reason for this uncertainty is that it’s actually quite difficult to categorize miniLED and OLED displays, especially since there are different implementations of each, some more sophisticated than others. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently suggested that Apple considers the miniLED to be the superior technology, as it initially planned to limit it to the iPad Pro, while moving from the iPad Air to the OLED (a plan which he says has been dropped for next year).
However, a new report today suggests that Apple may consider a new, more sophisticated form of technology to bring an OLED iPad Pro to market in 2024.
Report of OLED iPad Pro models in 2024
korean site The elec reports, indicating that LG, rather than Samsung, will manufacture the displays.
LG Display has started development for a 12.9-inch OLED iPad, TheElec has learned.
As Samsung Display recently abandoned the development of a 10.86-inch OLED iPad that it was pursuing with Apple, LG Display will likely be able to enter the OLED information technology market on an equal footing. with his South Korean compatriot.
LG Display plans to start production between the end of 2023 and 2024.
The OLED technology in question is said to be more sophisticated than the current versions, with a second layer intended to boost both brightness and longevity.
To apply to the 12.9-inch OLED iPad, the company is developing dual-battery tandem technology __ where there are two layers of red, green and blue emission layers __ and thin-film transistor technology. Low Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide (LTPO) (TFT). .
The two-battery tandem, by having two emission layers, increases the brightness of the OLED panel by two times and extends its life up to four times.
Computer products __ tablets and laptops __ such as iPads are used longer by consumers than smartphones, so they need to have more durable panels.
LG has already made these screens for smartphones, but will need some time to increase in size.
