Olivia Plath admits she may have ‘left’ her marriage to Ethan Plath

When Welcome to Plathville Star Olivia Plath first met Ethan Plath, they were only 16 years old. Both brought up in similar fundamentalist Christian homeschooling families, they were on the same page in almost every way. But as she grew older, Olivia took important steps towards independence – and Ethan eventually began to follow.

Now 22, the young married couple have struggled in their marriage since getting married in 2018. Olivia revealed in TLC’s Welcome to Plathville segment of season 2, “The Story of Olivia,” that she might never have decided to marry Ethan if she had known all the drama with her in-laws, Kim and Barry Plath, which would end by follow.

Olivia and Ethan were overjoyed when they finally tied the knot after knowing each other for six years.

But according to Olivia, the couple’s excitement quickly turned to confusion and a sense of shock. After all, they had never gotten to know each other except within the confines of some sort of guarded parade. Now they had to figure it all out for themselves.

“We literally shot from under our parents’ roofs in our early twenties,” Welcome to Plathville star explained, “and it’s like, ‘Oh, shit. We don’t know who we’re going to be. “

She further explained that their “restrictive upbringing” required them to marry before they could become intimate in any way or get to know each other fully. In addition, they both grew up on farms, homeschooled and in large families. Without those similarities to fall back on, they felt a bit lost, to say the least.

“We were both, in a sense, running from our childhood and all the ways we had been controlled. And we both wanted to go out, ”Olivia thought to herself.

Even though Ethan and Olivia were “on the same page” when they first married, things changed soon after. Olivia wanted more than ever to assert her independence from her education and background, while Ethan came more slowly and felt more conflicted. The contrast led to tensions between the married couple.

“It was a slower process for him than for me,” Olivia told her husband’s TLC producers. “We kind of grow at different rates in different areas.”

Tears in my eyes, Welcome to Plathville The star even admitted that she might not have married Ethan if she had been able to see all the heartbreaking things that would happen in their future. While loving her husband, she confessed that she sometimes wondered if all the pain was worth it for them both.

“If Ethan and I could have just dated and got to know each other and I could have seen everything that was going to happen now back then, I think I probably would have disappeared,” Olivia said. “But I would also have missed Ethan and who he is as a person.”

Ethan and Olivia struggled with the ongoing judgment of the Plath family

Of course the young Welcome to Plathville couple had their own differences to resolve. But, at least in Olivia’s mind, their biggest problem was without a doubt the ongoing conflicts with her in-laws.

Kim and Barry Plath refused to allow Olivia to be with their children unsupervised; later this restriction extended to Ethan as well. The lack of confidence started to wear on Ethan and Olivia over time.

Visibly hurt, Olivia revealed that Barry went so far as to tell Ethan that he could come to the Plath family house anytime – as long as his wife wasn’t with him.

“Ethan having to make a choice between me or his siblings is really between us,” Olivia said, “because there are times when I just want to say to him, ‘You know what? It is not fair for you to have to choose. Although Olivia didn’t laugh at the fact that she had considered divorce – both for herself and for her husband – she loved him very much and hoped things would work out.

“I don’t want to give it up”, the Welcome to Plathville the star said in tears.
