Rodrigo is also likely to be nominated for Album of the Year for her debut, Sour. The album is currently in its fourth non-consecutive week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. It is one of the three longest stays at No. 1 of all albums released during this eligibility period (from September 1, 2020 to September 30, 2021). The others are by Morgan Wallen Dangerous: the double album (10 weeks) and Taylor Swift Always (also four weeks). Sour also went down in history as the first album to contain two songs that entered the Hot 100 at # 1 – “drivers license” and “good 4 u”.
Sour has been included on BillboardThe unranked list of the 50 best albums of 2021 to date: staff picks. While writing about the album, Josh Glickman was impressed with Rodrigo’s songwriting. (She wrote or co-wrote all 11 songs on the album.) He observed, “From her most striking insecure lyrics to her most biting lyrics, her songwriting prowess is on full display.”
Sour has a solid 83 rating on Metacritic.com, the review aggregation site.
Rodrigo is also likely to benefit from the Grammys’ long history of supporting young star singer / songwriters in top categories. It goes back to Bobbie Gentry, who wrote and recorded the haunting 1967 smash “Ode to Billie Joe”. Gentry, 23 at the time, was the first artist to be nominated in each of the Big Four categories in the same year.
Other young singers / songwriters – Tracy Chapman, Mariah Carey, India.Arie, Amy Winehouse and Billie Eilish – have since matched this feat. Other young women who have scored big points at the Grammys over the years (although that particular feat has eluded them) include Alanis Morissette, Lauryn Hill, Swift, Norah Jones and Lorde. Rodrigo has been compared to several of these award-winning artists for his music and artistry.
With all that for that, Sour could win album of the year. That would make Rodrigo the third artist in Grammy history – after Christopher Cross and Eilish – to win the Big Four Awards in one night. Even though she loses the album of the year and ends up with “only” three of the Big Four Awards, she will still be in great company.
Let’s take a closer look at the winners of the Best New Artist who, that year, won at least three of the Big Four Awards.
Clean Sweep (the four rewards):
Christophe cross: At the 1981 ceremony, Cross became the first artist to win all four awards. He won Album of the Year for his self-titled debut and Record and Song of the Year for his hypnotic ballad “Sailing.” The Texan was the last big star to emerge before MTV arrived in August 1981, placing more emphasis on image and appearance.
Billie Eilish: At the 2020 ceremony, the then-18-year-old prodigy became the first female artist to win all four awards. She won Album of the Year for her debut, When we all fall asleep where do we go?, and record and song of the year for “bad guy” (which she co-wrote with her brother, Finneas.)
Near Sweep (three of the four awards):
Norah jones: At the 2003 ceremony, Jones’ debut, Come with me, won the album of the year award and her silky “Don’t Know Why” won the record of the year award. “Don’t Know Why” also won song of the year, but Jones did not write or co-write the song. The award went to its writer, Jesse Harris.
Amy winehouse: At the 2008 ceremony, Winehouse’s pungent, retro “Rehab” won the record and song of the year award. His second solo album, Back to black, was nominated for Album of the Year, but lost to Herbie Hancock River: Joni’s letters.
Sam smith: At the 2015 ceremony, Smith’s soul ballad “Stay With Me” won the record and song of the year. (Smith co-wrote the song with James Napier and William Phillips.) His debut, In the Lonely hour, was nominated for Album of the Year but lost to Beck’s Morning phase.
