Fans have been waiting for Olivia Rodrigo’s response to Joshua Bassett and Sabrina Carpenter’s alleged love triangle, and it’s finally here. The 17-year-old “Driver’s License” frontman brought up the rumor in an interview with Billboard.
When recent theories about her ex and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series costar, Bassett, came in for the interview, Rodrigo got a timid response. “I fully understand the curiosity of people with the specifics of who is talking about the song and what it is about, but for me it really is the least important part of the song,” she told Billboard. “It resonates with people because of his emotion, and I think not everything else is important.”
As for what she meant by * everything * else, here’s a quick explanation of the whole Rodrigo-Bassett-Carpenter drama. When Rodrigo released his first single, “Drivers License,” on January 8, 2021, fans quickly started picking up lyrics that seemed to hint at a love triangle between her, Bassett, and Carpenter. In the song, Rodrigo sings about how his ex is now dating “that blonde girl” who is “so much older” than her. Carpenter – who has been spotted with Bassett in recent weeks – has blond hair and is four years older than Rodrigo. Coincidence? The fans don’t think so.
If that didn’t convince you, fans also picked up on clues that revealed Bassett taught Rodrigo to drive before he got his license. And in an early version of the song shared in July 2020, the lyrics of a “blonde girl” were originally “brunette girl,” meaning the HSMTMTS alum may have changed his lyrics later to reflect Bassett’s alleged romance with Carpenter.
For what it’s worth, Rodrigo also revealed in her interview with Billboard that she was initially “terrified” to release the song. “It was like my deepest insecurities in a four-minute song,” she said. Although the song was a streaming hit, it seems his fears weren’t entirely unfounded: just a day after Rodrigo’s interview with Billboard, Carpenter released his own track (diss).
The song, titled “Skin,” was released by Carpenter on Thursday, January 22. In this track, Carpenter apparently addresses Rodrigo’s lyrics directly: “Maybe you didn’t mean it / Maybe blonde was the only rhyme,” she sings. Later, she included what many listeners interpret as a play on the title of Rodrigo’s song, singing, “Don’t drive yourself crazy / It won’t always be so.”
