At a wide playing position that seems to have taken a week of football in pre-season, former Division II player, Gunner Olszewski, may have found a way to clear a path towards alignment of 53 players.
In the Patriots' 10-3 preseason win Thursday night against the Panthers, Olszewski was the main return of the punt since receiver Braxton Berrios was inactive for the game. On four returns, Olszewski totaled 63 yards, showing great vision and able to sneak past blockers in a small space. It's amazing that the unqualified college cornerback has these kinds of skills, but it's still a very useful asset that New England could use in 2019.
"The artist is an aggressive kid," said head coach Bill Belichick at the press conference he held after Thursday's meeting. "He did a good job managing his roles in the kickoff game in an offensive way. He is a very competitive kid. "
At 33, it would be wise for the Patriots to use Julian Edelman, a veteran of the clearance sale, as an offensive weapon. Unfortunately, in recent years, the team had no choice but to use it as a punt returner, as there were no other players able to fill that void. 2019 offers an opportunity for this to change.
Olszewski is a raw talent at the NFL, which would allow the team to keep him for nothing financially while occupying a key position on the team.
His contributions as a ghost will give him a length ahead of the rest of the receivers on the depth chart, even though his abilities as a receiver are not very strong. But with Edelman, Josh Gordon, N'Keal Harry, Phillip Dorsett and Thomas Locking Demaryius to make the lineup, his chances of being part of the regular season team are still very slim.
