Olympic gold medalist Madi Wilson revealed on Monday that she had been hospitalized with COVID-19.

The Australian swimmer who won Olympic gold in the 4×100 freestyle in Rio (2016) and Tokyo (2021) made the announcement on Instagram, writing that she was “extremely disappointed and upset not to run alongside my teammates “in a competition of the International Swimming League.

“It’s been a crazy few months and I think being physically and mentally exhausted maybe made me more susceptible,” Wilson wrote. “I feel extremely unlucky, but I think it’s a huge wake-up call.

“Covid is a serious thing and when it happens it hits really hard. I would be stupid to say I wasn’t scared.”

Wilson has “underlying chest and lung problems”

Wilson wrote that she was “double vaccinated” and described her hospitalization as “as a precaution”. She posted in subsequent Instagram stories that she had “underlying problems with her chest and lungs” and believes receiving the vaccine kept her case from getting worse.

“I especially wanted to jump on it and continue to encourage people to get vaccinated,” Wilson said. “I ended up in the hospital, but it’s as a precaution as I have underlying chest and lung issues.

“(The vaccine) has protected the people around me who I’ve been close to during this last period of time, and I’m so grateful because I wouldn’t want anyone else in this situation. that it reduced what happened to me and what could happen to me. “

Wilson, 27, has competed internationally for Australia since 2012. In addition to his Olympic gold medals, Wilson won silver in Rio in 2016 4×100 medley and bronze in Tokyo in 4×200 freestyle. She also holds three gold medals at the FINA World Championships.
