Olympic swimmer Klete Keller charged with additional charges in riot at Capitol Hill

Olympic swimmer Klete Keller has been charged with additional charges for his alleged role in the riot at the U.S. Capitol.

The two-time gold medalist, 38, was initially charged by federal authorities in January with three crimes: obstruction of law enforcement, violent entry and disorderly conduct and entering a building with restricted access.

A grand jury released a new indictment on Wednesday charging him with seven felonies, including civil unrest, obstruction of formal process, entry into a restricted building, disorderly conduct in a restricted building and disorderly conduct in a Capitol building.

Calls to the numbers listed for Keller were not returned on Friday and his lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment.

A video Posted on Twitter by a Townhall Media reporter showed Keller inside the Capitol with a group of President Donald Trump supporters on January 6. In the video, the crowd pushed against police officers trying to clear the rotunda.

Keller was seen in the footage wearing his “USA” jacket. No video has emerged of Keller’s participation in any of the violence in the Capitol.

Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, said in a January statement that she condemned the “actions of the rioters on the US Capitol.” USA Swimming issued a statement expressing similar sentiments.

Keller, who was a teammate of Michael Phelps, has not publicly spoken about his alleged participation on Capitol Hill.

The athlete was last registered as a member of USA Swimming in 2008. After moving away from the sport, he worked as an independent contractor for Colorado Springs real estate agency Hoff & Leigh but quit the month latest.

More than 200 people have been charged in the riot, which took place after pro-Trump supporters raped the Capitol to protest the Electoral College vote confirming Joe Biden’s presidential victory.
